Come Visit Us At The Ship
Friend or Potential Friend,
If you are reading this, you have stumbled upon our website. Welcome. We are The Ship, short for Jacksonville Anglican Fellowship. Some would call us a church, and that is okay. We do some of the things that churches do: we worship on Sundays, have programs for kids and adults, seek ways to serve the community, etc. But we see ourselves as a fellowship, a group of people who are on a quest, the adventure of following Jesus. Many of us have been deeply hurt or disappointed with our "church" experiences in the past. We seek a new way forward with Jesus, a way that keeps Jesus and his message of love, humility, forgiveness and restoration at the center of all we do and teach. As Jesus said, "God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him." (John 3:17) One thing I’ve learned in my 60+ years is that we all need to be saved from something: our past, our fears for the future, our own mistakes or the mistakes of others, a warped view of God, a sense of guilt or shame... each of us needs God to lift us up, dust us off, look us in the eye, and tell us he loves us. That’s what we’re about. There’s a story in the Bible in which a bunch of guys dig a hole in a roof to get their hurting friend to Jesus. That’s our story. At one time, each of us was the guy on the stretcher being lowered through the roof. Now, we dig the hole for others. The goal is the same: get hurting people as close to Jesus as possible. He will do the rest. Join us for a Sunday or two. Walk with us as we try to walk with Jesus. If you have any questions, I’m the pastor. My name is Sam. My cell # is 904-553-0017. Give me a call. What is an Anglican and why would I ever want to be one?
We are an “Anglican” Church. So what? The Anglican Church is, historically, rooted in England (Angle-land). We are a Bible-centered, protestant church, reborn in the 16th century but having our foundations in the soul and soil of the first century church. Thus, we are a new part of something very old. We are also small part of something big. The Anglican Church is the largest protestant church in the world, with over 77 million members.
The Anglican Church understands that God revealed himself in Jesus (God’s Word) and in Scripture (God’s Words). We understand God’s Word and Words through tradition (what others have already learned) and reason (using our brains). We place a high value on worship, the scriptures, and the sacraments of Communion and Baptism. We have communion at every service every Sunday. Thus, in every service God touches us physically (bread, wine, touch), intellectually (reading and learning), and through sight and sound (beauty and music).
Come discover this time-tested way of worship. Our music is contemporary yet sacred. Our sermons are Bible-based yet relevant to today. We mix ancient symbols like candles and vestments with powerpoints, movie clips, and electric guitars. Who knows, you may meet God in a new, comforting way.
